There is a version of Hvar that most visitors see. The harbour. The fortress. The restaurants along the waterfront. But that only tells part of the island’s story.

The other version takes a bit more effort to reach, because it doesn't advertise itself. It’s the version that lives in the inland villages, old stone houses and the hands of people who have been doing the same things for generations. That version is harder to find. It is also the one we always want to share.

Terra Arhaica, in the village of Vrisnik, is one of the best examples we know of that version.

What Terra Arhaica actually is

Terra Arhaica is not a museum, and that distinction is the whole point. Museums ask you to look. Terra Arhaica asks you to participate.

Inside a 150-year-old Dalmatian house, a family has built something that sits entirely outside the usual tourist itinerary — a living encounter with island life as it was lived 200 years ago. Guests are welcomed by hosts in traditional costume, then guided through the house and its outbuildings, discovering how people on this island once worked, ate, preserved food, pressed wine, repaired nets, ground wheat on a stone mill, dried figs and kept a household running through the long winters.

The experience ends with a tasting of fresh bread, olive oil, wine and traditional island sweets including paprenjak, hrustula and candied almonds made from family recipes that predate the owners. You eat well. You also leave knowing something real about the island that you didn't know before.

The experiences on offer

Terra Arhaica runs several different formats depending on what you're after. The main experience — Back to the Roots — covers the full breadth of traditional Dalmatian life: crafts, tools, storytelling, food and a sense of what it actually felt like to live here before the catamarans full of tourists arrived.

The cooking class takes place in a historic Dalmatian kitchen, producing homemade gnocchi, fresh bread and traditional dishes using herbs and ingredients from the garden, followed by a private meal at the end.

For those interested in one of the island's most iconic plants, there is a dedicated lavender experience tracing its cultivation from ancient Roman times through to today, with lavender desserts, syrup and the chance to make your own scented souvenir.

For couples, the Cradle of Love experience is something else entirely: a candlelit dinner under 101 candles in a rustic tavern, an old Dalmatian kitchen or a hidden cave, with optional live baroque lute and the possibility of an overnight stay. It perfectly suits an anniversary, a celebration or a proposal… and it is not the type of thing you stumble across by walking along the seafront.

The people behind it

Terra Arhaica is run by Jakša and Lana Damjanić, born and raised on Hvar, and among the people on this island we trust most completely. This is an award-winning family farm and a genuinely personal project: Jakša's approach to what he does comes from a long-term commitment to preserving the island's heritage long after the tourist season ends, and Lana brings a warmth to the whole experience that makes guests feel welcomed rather than simply hosted.

Why we love it

When we recommend something at Villas Hvar, it is because we have seen it ourselves, spoken to the people behind it and believe it is worth your time. Terra Arhaica clears that bar comfortably.

The holiday we want for our guests has never been just about the villa. Because we’ve always believed that the villa is only part of a stay. The rest of it, or the part that gives a holiday its meaning, comes from the moments that connect you to the island.

terra

Terra Arhaica is one of those moments. It is a family preserving something that could easily have been lost, sharing it with visitors who are willing to leave the harbour behind for an afternoon and go looking for the real thing. We find that important and worth supporting. We also think it simply makes for a better holiday.
